DQSC in the dinghy news - 2009

The Club and its members made the national yachting press for many reasons in 2009.  For those who missed the action first time around here it is again - in no particular order:

a

In September the Club was awarded the prestigious RYA Volvo Champion Club status in recognition of the Club’s commitment to youth training and its delivery of high level training.  The award was presented by James Tilley, the RYA’s Youth Racing Operations Officer, and Alison Murphy from Volvo dealer Cambridge Garage, Portsmouth.

Gordon Barclay’s new Solo (S4936) was the centre of interest on the National Solo Class Association stand at the Dinghy Exhibition in March.  Displaying great ingenuity and benefiting from all of Gordon’s many years of Solo experience his boat was widely photographed and reported on.  He was heard to remark that his novel self bailer controls had been tested more in one weekend than they would be in several seasons!

Bill & Charlotte Dawber narrowly missed taking the Laser 2000 Inland Championship held at Ullswater Y.C. in September.  After winning two rounds of the six race series they were pipped to the title by just one point.  A few weeks earlier Bill, this time crewed by Stu Denyer, finished eighth in the National Championships held at Hayling Island SC. A planned sail by of L2Ks from HISC to Dell Quay to celebrate the Class’s 10th anniversary was unfortunately abandoned due to strong winds.

The Club was awarded RYA Power Boat Training Centre status which means it can train powerboat helms and crews ‘in house’.  It is planned that by 2011 all helms and crews manning patrol boats will be appropriately qualified.

Chris & Helen Turner won the vintage section of the Peter Milne Memorial Fireball open meeting held at Hayling Island SC in April.  Sailing their 47-year old Fireball, K6 ‘Six of the Best’, a rarely seen retro-rigged boat, they beat the other vintage boats – all rigged with trapeze and spinnaker – and missed beating a couple of modern boats by a whisker.  They were presented with their winner’s prize by Peter Milne’s widow, Maggie.
