Pleasant sunny weather, with a generally steady force 3 breeze, provided ideal conditions for Dell Quay Sailing Club’s bank holiday weekend race programme. This proved particularly successful for experienced club racer Richard Ede. Despite not having raced since last September and still getting used to his new Solo, Richard managed to take first place wins in every race held over the weekend.
For the Early Helm series on Saturday a short triangular course was set, due to the lack of wind at the start, with those boats choosing to sail under the west shore making good progress against the tide. In race 5 there was close racing at the front of the fleet between Chris West (Laser Radial), Ann and Jim Norfolk (2000), and Richard Ede (Solo), with John Purdy (Solo) not too far behind. Unable to keep up with Ede, The Norfolks finished second and West third.
In race 6, once again West and Ede had a close race at the front of the fleet, but behind Andy Gray (Finn) who had established a good lead at the start. At the finish Ede pushed Gray into second place with West coming third again.
On Sunday the Bank Holiday Mini-Series got underway, with a committee boat start in the centre of the course. All races were dominated by the Solos, with Ede skilfully keeping well clear of the incoming tide as well as making effective use of the many windshifts. The competing boats stayed quite close throughout the racing but on each lap Ede pulled away on the run back to Quay buoy to finish first each time.
In race 1 Ken Baker (Solo) took second place, ahead of Martyn Jones (Laser Radial), with Jones and Baker swapping places in race 2. In race 3 Gordon Barclay (Solo) came second with Jean and Liz Sagues (Lymington Scow) third. The overall result for the series was Ede first, Baker second and Jones third.
