Dell Quay Sailing Club April Cruises

The 2015 cruiser rally programme has started in glorious sunshine with a couple of shake down cruises to nearby destinations. The first on Saturday 18 April was to Port Clarence in Portsmouth Harbour and although three cruisers had signed up, a strong wind warning deterred all but the intrepid leader Dick Cole who made the journey in Moody Maid accompanied by Peter Elford. Martin Watson made a shorter journey in his dinghy from Frith's new mooring at Gosport to join Dick and Peter for an Indian meal.

All made good progress initially in a gentle following wind out of the harbour but had to resort to using the motor as the wind died once into the Solent. Frith (Martin Watson) was the first into The Duver, Bembridge, closely followed by Cantata (Esmond

Pope, Dick Hoare and Ian Sinclair), Fairwind of Dell Quay (Sue and Barrie Pearson), then Niobe (Bill Greening, Kip Moore and John Wharf), Sandpiper (Peter Elford), and Pegasus (Ken Baker and Keith Beasley) all secured alongside the long pontoon. Plenty of room for us at this time of year. Drinks and nibbles were enjoyed aboard Fairwind who settled gracefully (and upright) on her fin keel in the soft mud at low water. The Vine in St Helens provided good value meals and all safely negotiated the causeway on the way back.

The Marina staff were most helpful even coming around with Sunday papers. The fine weather continued on Sunday and with an inshore forecast of NE 4/5, 6 at times, a bouncy beat back into Chichester against the tide ensured the trip certainly became a 'shake down' cruise. Niobe and Frith headed west and had a quicker trip to Cowes and Gosport respectively.

The next cruise is on Wednesday 6th May, destination Yarmouth, leader Dave Jardine-Smith, followed by a weekend cruise to Cowes on Saturday 16th May led by Mike O'Donoghue. Register using the links on the Club website.
